Yummy New SCD Cookbook

I have a new favorite cookbook! It's "Recipes for the Specific Carbohydrate Diet" by Raman Prasad. Although the Specific Carbohydrate Diet (SCD) includes lots of great food choices, it doesn't allow for dining at my favorite Asian and Indian restaurants. Raman's culturally diverse recipes are bursting with the flavors of the ethnic cuisines I've been missing. One of my favorites so far is Kung Pao Chicken, which is wonderfully flavored with Raman's SCD Asian Sauce (hurray for a yummy soy sauce substitute!). And in my opinion the Beef Vindaloo rivals some of the best Indian restaurants in our town. I love, love, love this cookbook's mouthwatering photography; the compelling foreword and introduction to the diet; and the personal touch of Raman's stories about food, family, and friends. I highly recommend this cookbook for anyone who wants to add some pizzaz to their SCD fare. I can't wait to try out more of the recipes. Now if I could just get my two-month-old daughter to give me more than two minutes peace in the kitchen!

That's a mouthwatering review! Beautifully written... can't wait to try something yummy from your kitchen when I visit next week. I'll hold the baby!

Amy, have you tried the tilapia with mango salsa? It is really really good! It is really quick and easy. The salsa takes a little time, but you can always do that the night before!

Hi!

I'm an SCDer with ulcerative colitis. I've been back on the diet for almost 2 months now after a failed attempt last year (for various reasons I'll omit here) and things are going well. I've been lurking on your blog for about 6 months and I thought it was about time I make myself known so I can ask you a question.

I have a healthy, happy, nursing 3-month old baby girl (I was cheering you on from afar in your pregnancy - you were a couple months ahead of me). Theoretically, I should start feeding her "solids" in the next couple months. I was wondering what you're doing with your beautiful babe for food?

I'm reluctant to start her on the good ole' American standard first food of fortified rice cereal in light of everything I've learned from the diet. I was thinking about introducing her to foods in much the same way that I am introducing foods for myself on the SCD - starting with easy to digest veggies and fruits and then moving on to meats and SCD yogurt and not introducing grains until much later than I did with my other two kids. Sorry for such a lengthy comment from a stranger on a topic not specifically related to this particular blog post!

Thanks!
Gretchen

Hi Gretchen, and Happy Mother's Day! Thanks for the blog comment--it's nice to find out who my readers are, especially on the SCD and baby fronts. I'm so happy that you are feeling good back on the diet. For me, it's a wonderful gift to have a solution that doesn't involve medication.

Good question about introducing solid foods to your baby. I have been thinking a bit about that too lately, since Cassidy is almost 5 months old. We started Sophia on rice cereal and banana around 5 months, but I think we'll wait until 6 months for Cassidy. My first inclination is to start with rice cereal because it worked fine for Sophia, and she doesn't have any digestive issues at age 3. But I might change my mind in the next month as I think about it more. I found a couple web articles about alternative first foods. They say that rice cereal isn't necessary except for the iron supplement it contains, and they suggest veggies, fruits, and meats (which are naturally high iron). So, I guess I'm still undecided on the issue. Let me know if you come to any conclusions--I'm curious to know what you plan to do.
