Stephen McKenna finishing the Dexter Ann Arbor Run 2007

If life were a video game, I just leveled up. All the effort I put into making improvements over the last year just came to realization on Sunday when I cut my half-marathon time by 8:20 with a time of 1:30:41! To put some perspective on that, in the three years prior I had improved 3 minutes. My pace in this race was faster than my 10k pace last year. Also, this was the first Dexter/Ann Arbor Run that I ran consistenly the whole way. My pace was steady throughout and I didn't burn myself out on the hills. In the past I would pass several people at the beginning and then lose ground after the halfway point. This time I was continuously passing people the whole way.

When I finished I felt like I had left it all on the course, but I was surprised to find that a minute or so after stopping that I felt fine. As fine as one can feel after running a half-marathon at least. I have developed some soreness and fatigue since then, but my recovery has been better than in the past.

With all my training and events, Sophia has been into pretending that she is running marathons and participating in triathlons lately. She'll say she wants to run a marathon in our driveway and ride here new trike up and down the sidewalk to her friend Maya's house. I'm encouraged that my athleticism is having a positive influence on her. One of my hopes for her is that she will grow up with a life long passion for being active. I was heartened again when she told me, after seeing my finisher's medal around my neck, that she was going to win a medal one day.

I love love love that you are improving so much! You are an inspiration to me. I am sure that the people in my triathlon group are sick and tired of hearing about you! :-)

Congratulations!
