Happy SCD Anniversary!

Today is my one-year anniversary of being on the Specific Carbohydrate Diet (SCD) for Crohn's Disease. I guess it's kind of a big day! This morning, while eating some yummy homemade yogurt, a lemon poppyseed almond-flour muffin, and a very ripe banana, I got to thinking about it. A year. A whole YEAR. You know, this diet may end up being the biggest, most important life change I'll ever have made. I am proud of myself for sticking with it—and having had the guts to try it in the first place. Otherwise I'd be sitting here feeling sick, relying on iffy medication, and worrying about the future. But instead, I'm feeling better than I have in my whole life.

On this first anniversary, here are some of the things I'm especially thankful for:

  • Great food that makes me feel good.
  • Remission without medication.
  • My mom Beth, who has been there for me every step of the way.
  • My SCD pals who've been a great inspiration. (Thanks for the ice cream maker, Jill!)
  • My husband and toddler, for being OK with a slice of bread on the side of an otherwise grain-free meal.
  • An amazing pregnancy with no Crohn's complications.
  • Feeling well during this hormonally sketchy postpartum time.
  • Cassidy, my beautifully healthy SCD baby.

It has been a year of health, happiness, and freedom from gut pain. Here's to feeling good!

Cheers on your first anniversary! It's great to see your progress and know that there is an answer and an alternative to medication. I hope that I am able to share my success story a year from now just like you. Take care!

CONGRATS Amy! You are truly an inspiration to me and many others. Whenever people tell me that Crohn's is probably in remission due to the surgery I just point at you and say - explain this then....

Now that you are a veteran - any words of wisdom for a newly pregnant SCD Mom with Crohn's? How did you stave off the morning sickness on the SCD?

I am lucky that I didn't have much morning sickness with this pregnancy. It definitely helped to eat small frequent meals and to make sure my blood sugar stayed up, with orange juice and fruit. I ate a ton of raisins, and now that I think about it, those really helped if I was feeling queazy. Also, I made sure to eat a little something before I got out of bed in the morning. I always kept a light snack on the night stand. Usually raisins and cashews. With my first pregnancy (non-SCD), I was totally nauseous for the entire first trimester. Ginger snaps really helped back then. So, maybe you could make ginger almond flour cookies? Or drink ginger tea--oh yes, I did drink ginger tea this time around, and that helped a lot.
